It survives repetition, because a name that is funny once becomes tiring by the fourth week of a season. How do I come up with a good team name?
Test candidates against three moments a name has to survive: being read aloud by an announcer, being repeated every week of a season, and fitting on a scoreboard or jersey. A name that passes all three beats a funnier one that fails any of them.
How long should a team name be?
Two to four words, and under about twelve characters if a scoreboard will display it. Long names get truncated in league software and abbreviated by everyone, so the abbreviation ends up being the real name anyway.
Can two teams have the same name?
In casual leagues, usually yes, and it rarely matters. If the league software requires unique names, a location, year or number tacked on resolves it. Trademark only becomes a question if you sell merchandise under the name.
What makes a funny team name stay funny?
Wordplay tied to the activity itself ages far better than a joke borrowed from this month's meme. A pun about the sport is funny in week ten; a meme reference usually is not.
