What changes when the name appears in a notification

A group chat name is the most-seen name in any of these categories, and the least ceremonious. It shows up dozens of times a day on a lock screen, usually truncated, usually glanced at rather than read. Its job is to be recognisable in half a second, not to be admired.

That is why length matters more than wit here. A notification shows a handful of characters before it cuts; anything whose point arrives at the end of the name never arrives at all. Short, front-loaded and distinctive beats long and clever, because the name is competing with every other chat on the phone rather than with other names.

Group chat names are also the only ones expected to change. They get renamed after trips, arguments, running jokes and seasons, and that churn is part of the format rather than a failure of the original. A name that is trying to be permanent is slightly missing the point; pick something good for now and expect to replace it.

Where these names go wrong

• It is too long to read. The phone cuts it. If the funny part is at the end, nobody sees the funny part.
• It is about one person. Chats outlast moments. A name about somebody's mistake stops being funny for exactly one member of the group.
• It is unsearchable. Emoji-only and symbol-heavy names cannot be found when the chat has scrolled down the list.
