What changes when the name has to keep people showing up

A fitness team name is not decoration, it is an accountability device. It gets typed into an app, read in a weekly message, and seen by people at the exact moment they are deciding whether to go. That is a job no other category asks a name to do, and it rules out most jokes.

The reliable division is between names that laugh with the group and names that laugh at it. Self-deprecation is funny in week one and corrosive by week four, because by then somebody has genuinely missed sessions and the name is describing them. A name built on effort rather than failure keeps working when the novelty is gone.

Length of commitment should decide ambition. A six-week challenge team can carry a topical, disposable name; nobody will say it after the final weigh-in. A gym squad or a running club that intends to exist next year needs something that still fits when the members have changed and the original in-joke has no witnesses left.

Where these names go wrong

• It names a starting point. Anything referring to current weight, size or fitness stops being accurate the moment the plan works, which is the whole point of the plan.
• It only makes sense to the founders. Fitness groups lose and gain members constantly. A name explained by an event three people witnessed excludes everyone who joins after it.
• It is a pun on a specific exercise. Programmes change. A name built around burpees is awkward once the group has moved to lifting or running.
