What changes when the name has to pass a teacher

A school name has a reader nobody else's name has: an adult who can veto it. That single fact decides more than style does. A name that would be fine in a group chat has to survive being printed on a handout, read out at assembly, and repeated by a teacher who did not choose it and will not defend it.

Age moves the target more than subject does. Eight-year-olds want animals, colours and something they can shout; sixth-formers want dry understatement and will abandon anything that tries too hard to be fun. A name that works for a Year 3 table group is embarrassing to a Year 11 house team, and the reverse reads as joyless.

The other split is how long the name lives. A table group is named for a term and forgotten. A house or a form group carries its name for years, gets it printed on shirts and sports days, and accumulates history around it. Spend the effort on the permanent one; the temporary one only has to be clear and cheerful.

Where these names go wrong

• It becomes a child's nickname. Anything that can be shortened into a label for one pupil rather than the group will be, usually the quietest member. Say it aloud and imagine it aimed at one person.
• Nobody can spell it. If the name has to be written on worksheets by the pupils themselves, every extra letter and every clever misspelling costs time in every lesson.
• It dates to one year group. A reference to a current show or game is stale by the next intake. A house name that outlives its joke has to mean something on its own.
