What changes when the name sits in a league table all season

A fantasy name is unusual in that its audience is fixed, small and paying attention. Ten or twelve people see it every week for five months, in a standings table, next to your record. It is the most-repeated name in any of these categories and the one with the least escape from a bad choice.

The great trap is the player pun. A name built on one athlete is the funniest name in the league on draft night and a liability by November, because players get traded, injured, benched or dropped - frequently by you. A name tied to a player you no longer own is a weekly reminder that you drafted badly.

The second consideration is which way the name points. Self-mocking names are safe when you lose and awkward when you win; confident names are the reverse. Names that describe the manager's approach rather than the roster's fortunes survive both, because the season cannot make them wrong.

Where these names go wrong

• It names a player you will trade. The pun outlives the roster move, and everyone in the league can see both.
• It is truncated in the app. Most fantasy platforms cut the displayed name short. Front-load the part that matters.
• It guarantees a result. A name promising a championship is a running joke by week six in the league it fails in.
